Argus 4 Pro Review

In June, Reolink will release a bundle of new products, the Argus 4 Pro being one of them. As the latest model of Reolink's star product line, the Argus 4 Pro introduces a series of advanced features. In this article, we will review the main features of this camera and tell you their performance and upgrades from the previous Argus series cameras.

Quick Overview of Argus 4 Pro

Initially, I didn't anticipate a significant change in the design of Argus 4 Pro. The resemblance between the designs of Argus 3 Ultra and Argus 3 Pro led us to this assumption. However, the Argus 4 Pro has an entirely distinctive design within the flagship Argus series. It's a compact security camera that features a dual-lens design. For those famous with Reolink products, it could be likened to a mini version of the Reolink Duo series.

Installation and Setup

The Argus 4 Pro is entirely wire-free, making the installation relatively straightforward. I placed it outside my front door, directly facing the road. Before installation, charge it first and complete the initial setup. Download the Reolink app and sign up for an account (skip this step if you already have one). What's new about the Reolink Argus 4 Pro is that it can now be connected to the network via Bluetooth. Let the Reolink app access Bluetooth and location permissions, then turn on Bluetooth. Once the Bluetooth connection is established, select your Wi-Fi network and enter the password. This upgrade eliminates the traditional step of scanning a QR code.

Like installing other Reolink battery-powered security cameras, I just need to install the mounting bracket and attach the camera. Additionally, I purchased a solar panel. Remember to position the panel slightly above the device for optimal sunlight exposure.

Features and Performance

Based on the product specifications, this camera offers 4K resolution, color night vision modes, and an ultra-wide view. In this section, we tested some of these critical features.

4K UHD resolution

When testing the 4K resolution of this security camera, I was amazed by the incredible level of detail it captured. 4K resolution means the camera can record with four times more clarity than standard HD. It's like having a sharper, more detailed view of everything in its field of vision. Generally speaking, the camera can capture incredible details and help me differentiate between persons, vehicles, and animals. It's like upgrading from a regular photo to a super high-definition. The Argus 4 Pro enhanced our monitoring and reviewing experience.

180° panoramic view

The Argus 4 Pro captures extensive live footage. It covers a large area in a single shot. When I placed it outside my front door, pointing it directly at the street, it provided full coverage of the road from right to left.

As Reolink says, combining two lenses into one device offers a 180-degree panoramic view. It's like having human eyes that can catch more than what's right in front of you. This ultra-wide view is ideal for places like a backyard, a hallway, or the front porch. So, if you want to keep an eye on everything happening in a large area, this 180-degree panoramic view can be your perfect choice.

Night vision capability

Reolink introduced its ColorX technology for the first time in the PoE CX410. After months of anticipation, we finally have the battery-powered version of the ColorX cameras. During the day, the new Argus 4 Pro captures clear footage with excellent color accuracy. At night, the camera delivers full-color images without needing visible spotlights.

The overall image quality at night exceeds my expectations for a battery-powered model. However, what is surprising is that the Argus 4 Pro lacks black-and-white infrared night vision, which some users might consider a drawback.

Power consumption and recharging

Reolink asserts that, according to their laboratory tests, this camera boasts a 30% longer battery life than conventional IR night vision cameras. From my experience with various battery-operated cameras, I've observed that the infrared lights in most units remain active throughout the night to maintain visibility, which can significantly drain the battery.

When I compared the Argus 4 Pro to another battery-operated camera in my home, I discovered that the Argus 4 Pro has effectively addressed the high energy consumption issue associated with traditional IR lights. As a result, it offers a longer standby duration than other battery-powered night vision models.

Network connectivity

Reolink has incorporated Wi-Fi 6 technology into their latest Argus 4 Pro model. Fortunately, I have a Wi-Fi 6 router at home, which allowed me to test the camera's speed and latency. Upon connecting the camera to my home Wi-Fi, I immediately accessed the live feed through the app. Impressively, it took less than five seconds to start streaming the footage. The video stream was seamless, with no buffering interruptions.

Reolink cameras are commendable for their dual-band compatibility, supporting both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies. I experimented with switching between these two bands and found that the 5GHz frequency is slightly faster than the 2.4GHz. A feature of Reolink cameras that stands out to me is their implementation of two-factor authentication, which adds an extra layer of security for network access and data protection.

Smart motion detection

The new Argus camera has a 180° Passive Infrared (PIR) sensor to secure the ultra-wide range. This sensor ensures comprehensive detection coverage. I tested the notification speed when it detects movements within its field of view. After I stood in front of it, it took about 8 seconds to receive mobile push notifications. But it will take a few seconds more to load the entire live streaming. Due to the advanced AI algorithms, this dual-lens camera can distinguish between person, vehicle, and animal. I also created a customized detection for more accuracy.

Subscription-free

In addition to all its great features, the Argus 4 Pro is entirely subscription-free. I simply inserted an SD card to store the footage locally. Plus, I receive mobile push notifications and free person, vehicle, and animal detection without extra costs.

Pros and Cons

Overall, I think the Argus 4 Pro is worth the investment, as it requires no monthly subscription fees for smart motion detection, rich notifications, and local storage. Most importantly, it captures a 180-degree wide range area and full-color night vision at night.

  • Premium 4K UHD resolution
