Besides their standalone cameras, Reolink offers excellent home security systems that provide comprehensive protection for homes and businesses. Reolink's security camera systems boast many advanced features that enhance surveillance. One such system is the RLK16-800D8. In this article, we'll test the performance of this Reolink kit, discuss its advantages and disadvantages, and compare it with other Reolink systems.

Unboxing RLK16-800D8

  • NVR Power Adapter
  • HDMI Cable
  • USB Mouse
  • One 1m Network Cable and eight 18m Network Cables

24/7 Surveillance in 4K Ultra HD

Power over Ethernet; 24/7 Continuous Recording; 16-Channel NVR; 3TB HDD Built-In; Audio Recording; 100ft Night Vision.

This is a huge box with a lot of items inside. Reolink includes almost everything users might need for the installation process. They even include a free mouse for monitoring and control later on. Here are the things I like most about this box:

Network cable in different lengths

Reolink provides one 1-meter network cable and eight 18-meter cables. The shorter cable connects the NVR to the router, while the longer cables connect the individual cameras to the NVR.

These network cables facilitate the reliable and quick transmission of video data from the cameras to the NVR. Wired connections provided by network cables ensure a stable and secure link, crucial for continuous video monitoring and recording without interruptions.

Mounting Template

I also like the mounting template. While I've frequently used standalone cameras, I have yet to experience setting up a complete system. Since I plan to install cameras inside and outside my house, the template will help me mark the spots for drilling holes and ensure the cameras remain within the NVR's range.

Installing the RLK16-800D8 was easier than I expected. All the cameras are PoE, so I didn't need to charge them before installation and setup. I marked the spots where I wanted to place the cameras using the mounting template and chose a location for the NVR.

First, I connected the 16-channel NVR to my home router and powered it on with the adapter. If your Internet router doesn't have PoE functionality, you can add an extra PoE switch. Then, I mounted all the cameras in the desired locations. Next, I ran the wires between the NVR and the eight cameras. Finally, I connected the NVR and cameras by plugging in the Ethernet cables.

I also connected a monitor to the NVR using the HDMI cable in the box to facilitate the setup. I followed the setup instructions on the monitor and configured the camera settings and angles as needed. After the setup, I also added my NVR to the Reolink app for remote access via my phone.

Special Features and Performance

I focused on the following features when using the system and rated its performance.

4K Resolution and Image Quality

The cameras in this D800 kit are 4K 8MP security cameras with a dome design. After installing them where I wanted and connecting them to the NVR, I checked the video quality on the monitor. The 4K video from these cameras is precise and detailed. I can zoom in digitally to see details like faces and license plates from a distance.

I also checked the video streaming on my Reolink app. The live feed is generally stable with no buffering issues, but a stable internet connection is essential. You may need to manually reduce the playback speed if your internet is slow.

Person/Vehicle Detection

This camera kit includes person and vehicle detection features with no subscription fees. I set up customized motion zones for three cameras, and all are triggered when motion is detected. The person and vehicle detection of these cameras is very accurate. What I like about the motion detection in this kit is that if one camera detects motion, you can set all the other cameras to start recording. This means you can capture footage before a person or object comes into view.

Night Vision and Range

This camera records only black-and-white footage at night, which might be a drawback for those looking for color night vision. However, for essential surveillance, the IR night vision is sufficient. Reolink claims the RLK16-800D8 has a 100ft night vision range, which seems accurate. The black-and-white footage at night is clear, and the IR light doesn't disturb others, making the camera less noticeable.

Local Storage

The NVR includes a pre-installed 4TB hard drive, allowing storage up to 12 TB. This system supports 24/7 recording; the built-in hard drive can store about ten days' worth of data. Users can also schedule recordings; I set mine to record continuously at night. At the same time, motion detection is enabled, so the system captures events and saves them for later playback.
