  • Forever-powered compact Solar Camera w/5GHz Wi-Fi

    richlvilla - 26. Aug 2026

I recently added the Reolink Argus Solar to my home’s security setup. Our home backs up to wooded lands, and I chose the Argus Solar to monitor any activity from neighborhood cats, possums, rabbits or an occasional deer that might wander into our back yard.

The Argus Solar is a 5MP security camera with a built-in solar panel, PIR sensor, spotlight and siren. It incorporates a wide 132 degree diagonal field of view. The camera arrived at about a 50% charge, but while mounted outdoors with direct sunlight for 8 hours, it has been increasing the charge on the batteries by around 10% per day. Reolink does recommend fully charging the camera before installation. This is a perfect balance in charging capacity, but allows for the small size of the solar array. The Reolink SolarEase technology even shows the battery charging when the camara is in the shadow of nearby trees.

Setup was very easy! As I own a Reolink Home Hub, I had the option to connect directly to the Reolink’s 5GHz signal, reducing the number of Wi-Fi connections on my home Mesh network. The Home Hub is then connected via a CAT5 ethernet wire to my centrally located Cable router. For those concerned with privacy, nothing is stored in the Cloud, as video are stored in both the Home Hub and each camera’s microSD card, supporting cards up to 512GB.

Installation was simple, The Mounting Bracket uses two screws (included) and offers a solid mount and flexibility to adjust the angle of the camera.

Even though mounted over 20 feet from my Reolink Home Hub, it reports a good signal strength at 5GHz of -65dBm. The Argus Solar has an advantage over competitive brands, which will only offer the slower 2.4 GHz signal, greatly speeding the time to see both Live View and Recorded events.
The Reolink app offers easily the ability to bring up a live view and play recorded motion events. Using the Home Hub, I am able to bring up an Event History timeline, showing activity from all of my Reolink camera in a timeline format.

The Reolink app for Windows also offers a great interface for viewing both Live View and Playback, including a video timeline from all cameras when a Home Hub is connected.

I enjoy the viewing at night, as the Argus Solar has both Infrared and Color Night Vision, incorporating two 1.2W 6500K LED spotlights. When viewing Live View, you can toggle between the IR and Color modes at night.

For simplicity of design, flexibility of mounting and “forever” powered, I definitely recommend the Argus Solar.
